Applying For Wyoming Food Stamps
The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) was created to aid families who do not have the money to pay for their groceries each month. In 2010 alone, SNAP helped more than 40 million men, women and children get enough to eat.
Anyone in the United States can apply for food stamps, regardless of their background, race, gender, or religion. The average person received $101 from the SNAP program in 2008, allowing them to buy bread, milk, meat, vegetables, fruits and even garden seeds.
To be accepted into the food stamp program, you must meet certain monetary and situational requirements. Certain documents of proof of your eligibility are needed when you apply.
For most people under the age of 60, you cannot have more than $2,000 in assets. If you or someone in your household is at least 60 years old, that limit is raised to $3,000. If you are currently receiving aid from the Temporary Assistance for Needy Families program (TANF), or accept Supplemental Security Income (SSI), these do not count as assets when you apply for food stamps. Resources that do count towards your total assets include cash, money saved in a bank account and in some cases a vehicle.
Wyoming Regulations For Those Applying
There is also an income limit, which depends on the number of people living in your home at the time that you apply for food stamps.
Your expenses are also taken into account when you apply for food stamps. The amount you pay for child or elderly care, rent or mortgage and utilities will all be considered. Some medical expenses will also be considered under certain circumstances.
Wyoming EBT Card
When you are accepted into the SNAP program, you will receive an electronic benefits transfer card (EBT). An EBT card is very similar to a debit card and can be used at most grocery stores, and even some qualifying convenience stores or farmers markets. Before you use your EBT card for the first time, you will need to set a pin number. Instructions on how to set your pin number will be sent with your EBT card. If not, you can call customer service at (800)457-3659.
How To Use Your EBT Card
When you use your EBT card to buy food you will need to either tell the cashier that you are using EBT, or you may be able to push an EBT FOOD button at the register where you swipe your card. Your pin number will be needed once you swipe your card. Without your pin number the transaction cannot be completed.
How To Check Your Food Stamps Balance In Wyoming
Each user of food stamps needs to be aware of the remaining balance on their EBT card. Knowing how many food stamps you have left can save you from embarrassment at the cash register when you don’t have the food stamps to buy all of the food that you selected. Creating a budget with your food stamp benefits is also a good idea because it ensures that you do not run out of food money before the end of the month. To make sure your budget is evenly disbursed throughout the month, divide your benefit amount by 4 to determine how much you should spend on food each week.
